The Prime-Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno, at his official residence, on June 7th, 2021, as part of the preparation for Timor-Leste’s participation in the 13th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP- in Portuguese acronym).

The CPLP Summit will take place on July 16th and 17th, in Luanda, Angola, coinciding with the date marking the 25 years since the CPLP was set up, on July 17th, 1996.

During the Luanda Summit, Zacarias Albano da Costa, the former Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste will succeed the Portuguese Francisco Ribeiro Telles as the Executive Secretary of the CPLP. Cape Verde will also officially end its mandate, and Angola will assume the presidency of the CPLP.

During this meeting, the Head of Government and the Minister addressed issues related to the organization of Timor-Leste’s participation in the Summit and the future leadership of the CPLP Executive Secretariat, which will be held, for the first time, by Timor-Leste.

Adaljiza Magno referred that one of the issues to be addressed at the Luanda Summit will be the Agreement on Mobility among the CPLP countries, which may allow, for example, that students or doctors may circulate within the CPLP without needing a visa. The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic will be another of the themes to be analysed during the 13th CPLP Conference of Heads of State and Government.

The CPLP was set up on July 17th, 1996, in Lisbon, and consists of nine State Members – Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste.

The Lusophone organization’s objectives are political and diplomatic concertation and cooperation in all fields, amongst its members and the promotion and defence of the Portuguese language.
