The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, received this Thursday, April 22nd, 2021, in the Government Palace, the Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Xiao Jianguo, to deepen the analysis on China’s support to Timor-Leste, and in particular on the COVID-19 vaccine, in relation to which the Head of Government made an official request to his Chinese counterpart, Li Keqiang, in March of the current year.

The Head of Government’s request was positively answered by the Beijing’s Government, so that China will offer 100.000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine to Timor-Leste, to vaccinate the population, thus increasing their immunity against COVID-19.

The Ambassador Xiao also informed that China and Timor-Leste have been good friends, for a long time, and China considers Timor-Leste a good neighbour, friend and partner. China has always supported the process of the struggle for independence, for national construction and for development.

The Ambassador also stressed that today’s announcement marks an important step in bilateral cooperation between the two countries and hopes that this donation can strengthen the capacity of the Timorese to fight COVID-19 and can also facilitate economic recovery and flood recovery.

"Since the outbreak of COVID-19 emerged, Timor-Leste and China have stood side by side and have been collaborating with each other. China has been one of the countries that has been helping Timor-Leste, namely by sending a chartered plane with materials to fight this pandemic. The Chinese Government, now, and based on Timor-Leste's request, has agreed to support with 100.000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine".

"Chinese President, Xi Jinping, some time ago said that China would honour its commitment to make a vaccine for the good of the general population. China firmly believes in producing the COVID-19 vaccine for the good of the population and is seriously working towards improving access to the vaccine by developing countries, including Timor-Leste," the Chinese Ambassador said after his meeting with the Prime Minister.

Finally, the Chief of the Executive thanked, through the Chinese Ambassador, for the support of the Chinese people and the Chinese Government during all this time, and especially in this period of the pandemic. This support will greatly help the Timor-Leste's Government to fight this outbreak.
