Government of Timor-Leste

The letter with the official request from the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, sent last week to his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, received a positive response, which means that the Australian Government is ready to provide vaccines to the Timor-Leste Government, according to the request made.

In a meeting with the Head of Government, this Tuesday, at the Government Palace, the Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Peter Roberts, delivered a letter of response from the Australian Prime-Minister to the Head of Government of Timor-Leste.

The Head of Government, Taur Matan Ruak, was very pleased with the positive response from his counterpart, and therefore used the opportunity of the Australian Ambassador's presence, to, in his personal name, on behalf of the Government and on behalf of the Timor-Leste people, thank in a special way the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Ambassador Peter Roberts, and in general the people and the Government of Australia, for their generous support to Timor-Leste, that will allow the vaccination of the population, so the Timorese can develop immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. 

The Australian Ambassador in Dili, Peter Roberts, said that Australia is committed to support Timor-Leste, according to the Government’s priorities.

The Australian Government has also announced to the public an emergency aid of 7 million Australian dollars, to provide immediate emergency assistance to the population affected by flooding, due to the torrential rains and strong winds last April 4^th. 

During his speech, at the launch of the National Immunization Campaign against COVID-19, on April 7^th, in Formosa Neighbourhood, the Head of Government said that he had made a formal request to his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, to support Timor-Leste with the AstraZeneca vaccine, so that the country can complete the missing vaccines, besides the 20% that Timor-Leste has access to through the COVAX system.
