The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in its Report on State of Fragility 2020, published yesterday, September 17th, removed Timor-Leste from the list of states considered fragile.

This is the first OECD report that does not includes Timor-Leste in the group of countries considered to be fragile, now composed of 57 countries.

According to the report, “Timor-Leste emerged from the frame of fragility in 2020 edition (...) through “sustained investments, over time, in the mitigation of conflicts, strengthening of political institutions and building economic resilience”.

The OECD report states that, since 2018 edition, “the country’s fragility has decreased in all dimensions, except for a slight increase in the security dimension” and highlights the “notable declines in economic and environmental fragility” that “contributed to the Timor-Leste’s exit” from this list.

Regarding to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the report shows that “Timor-Leste is on track to achieve SDG 4 (education), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 16 (peace, strong institutions and justice) and SDG 17 (partnerships) and that progress is also moderately increasing in five other SDGs”.

In addition to Timor-Leste, Egypt, Malawi, Nepal and Rwanda also leave the list.
