IDN promotes International Conference on Affairs of the Sea - Timor-Leste: The century of the Sea
The National Defense Institute of Timor-Leste (IDN-TL) organizes an international conference in the auditorium of the Ministry of Finance on August 16-17, which aims to promote across all sectors of Timorese society the vital importance of the sea to the country, declaring the 21st Century as the period in which Timor-Leste must orient itself towards the sea.
The conference aims to provide a critical reflection on the need for a national policy centered on the sea as a fundamental element in the process of (re)construction of the State and transformation of Timorese society.
The proposed reflection will focus on the fundamental value of the Sea for Timor-Leste, highlighting its geopolitical and geostrategic relevance in the context of the strategic interests of the various powers (global, regional and sub regional), considering the phenomenon of globalization and in particularly the risks and threats to fragile states such as Timor-Leste.
The international conference has as its central theme "Timor-Leste: The Century of the Sea", and as sub-themes: "contributions from national sectors with potential to strengthen national security and development", and "ways of empowering the services and industries of national strategic infrastructures".
During the two days of the conference, 10 themes will be addressed by national and international speakers to promote and stimulate reflection and debate on marine issues, taking into account the national context in the emergence of the 21st century, laying the foundations for the creation of the National Strategy for the Sea, identify activities at the sectoral level for the pursuit of the national development goals established in the framework of a National Strategy for the Sea, and to increase national public debate within Timorese society on matters pertaining to Security and National Development, in an integrated way.
After the conference, a scientific journal will be compiled, which will compile with the talks given by the speakers and the transcription of the debates carried out by the participants.
