Dialogue on access to credit for sustainable development

On July 14, the 3rd National Discussion between the Public Sector and the Private Sector was held at the Timor Plaza in Díli.

At this roundtable meeting, the problems related to access to credit in Timor-Leste's banking system were addressed, with interventions by Alex Tilman, from the Prime Minister's Office, and Brígido de Sousa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Timor-Leste National Bank for Commerce (BNCTL). Timorese entrepreneurs Jorge Serrano, Chairman of Grupo Media Nacional and Higino da Costa, Director of Acelda Unipessoal Lda and specialist in the export of candlenut oil, presented the challenges and opportunities they had observed in the private sector. Clarissia Lay, owner of the Jacinto chain of stores, led a “debate on the challenges and opportunities for women entrepreneurs”.

The Minister of State, Coordinator for Economic Affairs and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (MECAE-MAP), Estanislau Aleixo da Silva, presided at the event, which was opened with remarks delivered by the Acting Prime Minister, Minister of State and Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Periera. Also attending was the Vice-Minister of Finance, Hélder Lopes.

According to Minister Estanislau da Silva, "the Government and the private sector have a good partnership and this is important to ensure sustainable development." He appealed to the new executive, who will arise from the next elections, to continue the work done so far, in the development and support of the private sector.

The 3rd National Discussion between the Public Sector and the Private Sector was organized by the Private Sector Unit of the MECAE Office, with the support of the Timor-Leste Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-TL), and had the participation of the Government, the National Parliament, entrepreneurs and civil society.
