Timor-Leste acquires earthquakes and tsunamis monitoring system
The permanent monitoring system of seismic waves on land and at sea, managed by the Institute of Petroleum and Geology (IPG), uses the latest technology in the Seismology field, the SEISCOMP3, which operates in the data collection and transfer via Internet.
The system was acquired in collaboration with the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics of Timor-Leste. The collected data will be processed by real time foreign monitoring institutions in earthquakes and tsunamis – the RIMES (Indian monitoring), the GEOFON (seismological broadband network), the BMKG (Indonesian Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics), the CTBTO (UN body that monitors compliance with the nuclear test-ban) and the University of Southern California. Once the results have been received in the IPG, they are sent to the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics of Timor-Leste, for further dissemination.
The Director General of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Joanico Gonçalves, attended the presentation of the system on October 14th, in the IPG, in Comoro, Dili.
The Institute of Petroleum and Geology is a public institute created in 2012 to manage the country’s geological information, including the research and exploration of petroleum, gas and mineral extraction resources.
