Conference of ASEAN Civil Society in Dili
The Government supported the Organization of the Conference of ASEAN Civil Society / ASEAN People's Forum 2016, which took place in Dili Conventions Centre (CCD), from August 3rd to the 5th.
The 2016 Conference theme was "Expanding People’s Solidarity for a Just and Inclusive ASEAN Community." This Conference was attended by more than 420 delegations coming from all ASEAN member countries civil society organizations, and about 555 participants from Timor-Leste. Some Members of the Government and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps also participated.
The Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araujo, thanked the solidarity and support shown by ASEAN civil society organizations in this Conference, both in relation to Timor-Leste’s fight to ensure its sovereignty, through the delimitation of maritime borders as to the country's efforts to become a member of ASEAN.
After presenting his speech, the Prime Minister opened the dialogue up with the participants, with a questions and answers session of the ASEAN nations and Timor-Leste civil society representatives. The more recurrent themes were the cooperation between the civil society and the Government, human rights, socioeconomic development, social audit and Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
