On December 11th, 2015, the awarding ceremony of the certificates for the specialized training in the investigation of drug trafficking crimes took place at the Scientific Police for Criminal Investigation (SPCI). The certificates were awarded to 24 trainees from SPCI and two public prosecutors.

The two weeks training had the participation of investigators and experts from SPCI, having been carried by two Chief Inspectors, experts in this theme, from the Judicial Police of Portugal. This is one of more than a dozen trainings that will be carried out in the 2015-2016 training cycle, to ensure the technical training and the development of capacities in the fields of criminal investigation, scientific police and laboratory analyses in Timor-Leste.

This project is part of the Justice Component of the Timor-Leste Support Programme to Democratic Governance, cooperation delegated by the European Union in Portugal in the Camões, which has, since 2012, and in partnership with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Justice, and with other local entities, accompanied the creation of a new component of the highly specialized criminal police, a key area for the development of the country.

The Scientific Police for Criminal Investigation, established in 2014, has 47 investigators and 31 forensic experts, all trained under the Programme, in a strategy which included training in Timor-Leste and in the School of Judicial Police, in Portugal.
