SSfM organizes colloquium on Investigative Journalism

The State Secretariat for Media (SSfM) organizes a three-day colloquium on Investigative Journalism. Between December 17th and 19th, journalists from the printed and digital press of Timor-Leste meet at Hotel Novo Turismo, in Dili, to address this subject. The invited trainers belong to LPDS (Lembaga Pers Dokter Soetomo/ Press Institute Doctor Soetomo) from Jakarta, Indonesia.

This colloquium aims to support training for journalists, editors and editorial staff, on the areas of investigative journalism and development journalism, thus raising the quality of publications and the active participation of media organizations, on behalf of the development and well-being of populations.

This initiative is included on a training program / workshop consists of two parts.

On the first part (December 15th and 16th) the trainees will visit institutions that employ journalists who were trained in Jakarta. There will be debates and exchange of views on how to continue trainees’ evolution after their return to Timor. It is also intended, through the LPDS, to provide the media from Timor-Leste and Indonesia with the possibility of cooperating between them, as it is included on the recommendations of the journalists’ training report. The hosting institutions for this visit are the Timor Post newspaper, the Media National Group, the STL Media Group, the Independente newspaper, the RTTL E.P. and Timor Kmanek radio.

The Colloquium on Investigative Journalism includes the second part of this program. It is organized at national level for three days (from 17 to 19 December 2014), and consists of seven sessions. Each of them will be guided by international and national experts. On the first day, presentations in the form of lectures will last 30-50 minutes. In addition to the introduction of the subject, it is intended to present practical exercises that aim to guide the participants in to the discovery of investigative journalism secrets.

The topics for this workshop are: "The Government´s constitutional duty to strengthen the media and journalistic services in Timor-Leste, with regard to the training of journalists"; "Relationship of State Media with journalistic services"; "Media and journalistic services quality in Timor-Leste: Challenges and strategies in order to strengthen the role and powers of the journalists organization, in terms of their training and journalistic services"; "Regulations to strengthen and support the training and the role of the media and journalistic services in Timor-Leste"; "Challenges of journalistic professionalism and idealism (Lived experiences in Timor-Leste and Indonesia)."

Participants include the Secretary of State for Media, Nelio Isaac Sarmento; Vice-President of Parliament, Adérito Hugo da Costa; President of the STL Media Group, Salvador Ximenes; the Executive Director of the newspaper The Dili Weekly, Emanuel Braz; and the founder of CJITL [Investigative Journalist Centre Timor-Leste] and member of AJTL [Association of Journalists of Timor Lorosa’e], Julio da Silva Guterres.

The international panel of trainers from Lembaga Pers Doktor Soetomo (LPDS) include Dr. Priyambodo HR, Executive Director, and three member teachers, Petrus Suryadi Sutrisno, Dr. Abdullah Alamudin and Dr. Warief Djajanto Bassorie.

This initiative is funded by the State Secretariat for Media (National Directorate for Information Dissemination - NDfMD) and counts with the ideas of the 25 students who concluded the course at LDPS, in Jakarta.
