SoSPTEP and IOM organize a seminar on migrating workers
The Secretariat of State for Professional Training and Employment Policy (SoSPTEP) organized a seminar on the subject “Labour Migration in Timor-Leste Consultative Workshop”, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), on November 7th, at hotel Novo Turismo, in Dili.
The seminar aimed to identify opportunities and challenges regarding the management of migrant workers in Timor-Leste. This was also the first step towards drawing the National Action Plan on migrant workers, by identifying priorities and measures to be taken in the implementation of a transparent and efficient management system for workers in Timor-Leste.
The Director General of the SoSPTEP, Jacinto Barros Gusmão, said that "the country is open to foreign investors, since they bring new experiences to the Timorese, who may use them one day if they wish to work overseas. It is our obligation to improve the national action plan so that the Timorese workers who leave the country have already acquired skills and experience”.
Besides the Director General of the SoSPTEP and his officials, representatives from international agencies like the World Bank, the ILO (International Labour Organization), IOM and civil society also participated in the workshop.
