The IV Constitutional Government is developing efforts to repair the Timor-Leste roads that currently are in bad conditions. The roads degradation is owe to the longevity (the biggest part has more than one decade when the medium “expiring date” of a road is seven years) and the strong rains that cause damage, al over the territory.

The total length of the existing roads in the national territory is six thousand and thirty six kilometres, according to a study made by the Ministry of Infrastructures in partnership with the Asian Development Bank. Half are rural roads, and only eight per cent is in good conditions.

The General Director of the Secretariat of State for Public Works, states, that “more than 80 per cent of the existing roads are in bad conditions. In bad conditions means, that the structure of the road itself should be rebuilt because the platform can not be recovered. We have conscience of this problem and we are betting in the rebuilding. In other words, we have to remove all the structure of these roads which the platform can not be recovered and rebuild all new”. The objective of the IV Constitutional Government is to endow the country with good quality roads system, that doesn’t need to be rehabilitated constantly. At the same time, is being established a plan for the periodic maintenance of the roads.
