Government of Timor-Leste expresses solidarity with Germany and Belgium

On behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, the Government expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the severe floods that hit western Germany and eastern Belgium, early Thursday morning.

At least 103 people, in western Germany, and 23, in the Belgian region of Wallonia, have died in the worst natural disaster to have hit central Europe. More than 1,000 people are still missing in the unprecedented floods that have hit Germany and Belgium, but also other countries in the region.

The torrential rains destroyed cars, houses and even entire streets, leaving thousands of people without access to electricity and telecommunications.

The Government of Timor-Leste commends the work of the authorities of the affected countries in their search and rescue efforts, under extremely difficult conditions.

The Spokesperson of the 8th Constitutional Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak and the entire Government, stated that "our deepest condolences go to the families that lost their loved ones and we salute those who continue to search for survivors. In these difficult days, Timor-Leste expresses its solidarity to the Governments and to all the people of Germany and Belgium". END
