Roberto Soares meets with Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore

The Secretary of State for ASEAN Affairs, Roberto Soares, met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore credited for Timor-Leste, Sudesh Maniar. The meeting occurred on February 10th, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation building, in Díli.

At the meeting, the Ambassador Sudesh Maniar delivered his credentials and, together, they discussed bilateral cooperation.

“It is a common practice in diplomatic representations”, said Secretary of State Roberto Soares.

The two diplomats exchanged ideas on perspectives for progress in bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Singapore. The new Ambassador praised the work of his predecessor, Ambassador Lee, in the strengthening of relations between the two countries.

He added that Singapore has supported Timor-Leste in the areas of human resource development, security, reinforcement of economic cooperation and organization of contributions from potential investors in this country. Timor-Leste thanked the support of the Singaporean Government.

About the issue of ASEAN, Roberto Soares said that Timor-Leste maintains its desire to become member of the organization. “I asked the Ambassador to present his Government our wish to expedite and ensure our participation in ASEAN’s activities, promoting our capacity building as a future member of the organization”, he said.

Singapore also thanked Timor-Leste for having supported its candidacy to the United Nations and other international organizations, namely the International Maritime Organization.

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Sudesh Maniar will present his credentials to the President of the Republic, after the swearing-in ceremony of the VI Constitutional Government.
