Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão congratulates the new Portuguese Prime Minister on taking office

On April 2nd, 2024, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão sent a congratulatory letter to the new Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, offering his congratulations on his recent election and the swearing-in of the 24th Portuguese Constitutional Government.

In the letter, the Prime Minister considered this appointment “a significant achievement and recognition of [Luís Montenegro's] commitment and dedication to the public cause”.

“On behalf of the People, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and [his] own”, Xanana Gusmão conveyed wishes for the “greatest success in the performance of this noble office” and “best wishes for the prosperity of the Portuguese people”

The Head of Government emphasised that “Portugal is a brother country of reference and has always been a steadfast partner of Timor-Leste, fundamental to the [national] state-building process”. He also expressed his “desire and willingness to work on consolidating the historic bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation that unite our peoples and countries”.

Xanana Gusmão also stressed his conviction that Luís Montenegro's Government would continue the “partnership for the defence of the highest democratic values and the promotion of common causes”.
