Government holds national seminar on rules and procedures in national infrastructure development

On February 15th, 2024, the Government of Timor-Leste held a National Seminar on Infrastructure Development to improve the sector’s quality and efficiency. This Seminar was held at the Ministry of Finance Auditorium in Dili.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Planning and Strategic Investment (MPIE – acronym in Portuguese) in partnership with the National Development Agency, the Major Projects Secretariat (SGP - acronym in Portuguese) and the National Procurement Commission (CNA - acronym in Portuguese), was attended by various entities, including Government officials, representatives of the National Parliament, ministerial lines, Government institutions, the diplomatic corps, civil society, development partners and academics. 426495179_251520638004272_4518134457360497636_n

The Seminar, entitled "Rules and Procedures for Infrastructure Development in Timor-Leste", reflects the 9th Constitutional Government's commitment to strengthening the infrastructure sector as an essential catalyst for the country's socio-economic development. During the event, issues related to improving national connectivity, transportation, and energy and the challenges faced while implementing infrastructure projects were addressed. 426519568_251520998004236_5234235745587842648_n

Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, in his speech at the seminar's opening, highlighted the strategic importance of infrastructure for economic growth and improving the population's living conditions. He also emphasised the need to follow strict rules and procedures to ensure transparency, efficiency and sustainability at all stages of the development of infrastructure projects. The Prime Minister highlighted the Government's commitment to tackling existing challenges, prioritising economic diversification and sustainable development, with investment in productive sectors and areas such as transport, energy and telecommunications.

The seminar provided a favourable environment for dialogue between the various stakeholders to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned. Discussions covered the need to align rules and procedures, simplify bureaucracy and attract investment to boost infrastructure development in Timor-Leste. The initiative aims to address current challenges and create a solid foundation for future projects to promote economic growth and improved access to essential services for all citizens.
