Today, August 4th, 2026, at the Government Palace in Dili, a new episode of the “Página do Governo” TV show was recorded, featuring Santos Noronha, the Secretary of State for Electricity, Water, and Sanitation. The discussion focused on the Government’s priorities for the energy sector, the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects, cooperation with development partners, and coordination with the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) to strengthen the national energy system.

During the interview, the Secretary of State emphasised the Government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity supply across the country by implementing priority infrastructure projects that support national development and improve the population’s quality of life.

The discussion highlighted progress on various strategic projects underway, including the Laleia Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the national power grid and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The interview also addressed the installation of underground power cables in Bidau and Becora, as well as the planned expansion of the underground distribution network to other areas, as part of the Government’s long-term strategy to improve the safety, reliability, and resilience of the power grid.

The Secretary of State also emphasised the importance of building and expanding the Comoro and Camea substations to increase electricity transmission and distribution capacity, enabling the national grid to meet growing energy demand.

In addition, the implementation of the 4D Drainage Project was presented as a crucial infrastructure initiative to protect strategic electrical facilities from flooding and to improve the resilience of public infrastructure.

During the interview, the minister further emphasised the valuable contributions of development partners to the Government’s energy sector agenda. Through technical cooperation, financial assistance, and knowledge sharing, these partnerships continue to accelerate the implementation of strategic projects and strengthen institutional capacity for the sustainable development of the electricity sector.

The Secretary of State also highlighted close coordination with the Minister of Public Works to ensure the effective integration of electrical infrastructure projects into the national infrastructure development policy. The interview also addressed key challenges facing the sector, including expanding access to electricity for remote communities, modernising outdated infrastructure, strengthening the system’s resilience, and ensuring the efficient delivery of high-quality public services throughout the country.
