Timor-Leste Calls for an End to the Embargo on Cuba and Reaffirms Its Solidarity with the Cuban People

The Government of Timor-Leste affirms its solidarity with the people and Government of the Republic of Cuba in response to the impacts of the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America, which has been in place since the 1960s and has intensified in recent years, with particularly severe effects in 2026.

The tightening of restrictive measures, including the imposition of extraterritorial sanctions and restrictions on fuel supplies, has contributed to a multidimensional crisis in Cuba, characterised by constraints in the energy sector, difficulties in the functioning of the economy, and shortages of essential goods. This situation directly affects the living conditions of the population, impacting access to food and other vital goods and services.

In this context, Timor-Leste affirms that relations between States should be guided by dialogue, respect for international law, and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, including the right to development and the well-being of peoples.

Cuba’s support and solidarity with Timor-Leste during the struggle for national liberation form the basis of a cooperative relationship that has lasted since independence, notably through the training of more than a thousand Timorese doctors in Cuba and the ongoing presence of Cuban professionals in the country in fields such as health and medical training, as well as through programmes in education and sports. The Government of Timor-Leste expresses its gratitude to the Cuban people for the support given over the years and reaffirms its solidarity in the current context.

The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Government Spokesperson, Agio Pereira, states that “Timor-Leste is following with concern the situation facing the Cuban people and reaffirms its position in support of solutions based on dialogue and respect for international law.” END
