Timor-Leste participated in the special session of the Executive Council on the reform of the World Health Organization (WHO), led by the Vice Minister of Health, Madalena Hanjam, held on November 1-3 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Executive Board is an administrative body of the World Health Organization, composed of thirty four nations. Timor-Leste, Myanmar and India represent the South East Asia region.
The Executive Council meets to review the resolutions and agenda of the World Health Assembly, also assuming responsibility for administrative matters. Its main functions are to implement the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and, in general, facilitate its work.
“As a member of the Executive Council, from March 2011 until January 2012, Timor-Leste was assigned the role and trust as Vice President of the Executive Council to lead the second meeting of the Executive Board during three days, along with Norway and Senegal.
The special session for members of the Executive Council resembles an extraordinary meeting that aimed at discussing the reform of the WHO in the future and achieve a consensus among all members.
It is intended that it be submitted for discussion at the 130th session of the Executive Council, which will be held in the first week of January 2012, and then report on the 65th World Health Assembly (WHO) in May 2012″, said the Vice Minister, Madalena Hanjam.
The report on the healthy reform of WHO in the future was presented in this session and points were discussed such as the program and the WHO’s main priority, health development and its determinations, the risk of disease and its conditions, the consolidation of the health system and institutions, health security in the public health area and humanitarian emergencies.
The role of WHO in global health governance was also discussed, namely the reform in the management area as an effectiveness and efficiency of the organization, the financing of the organization, policy and human resources management.
