Between January 16th and 28th, the Doulos Hope will open to the public with an international book fair on board in the Port of Dili, providing access to books and promoting reading among the population, particularly children and young people.

Although this is the Doulos Hope’s first visit to Timor-Leste, the country had already welcomed another GBA Ships vessel, then known as the MV Doulos, during a stopover in Dili in November 2008. On that occasion, the then Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, highlighted the mission of the floating library ships to the communities, stating: “We recognise your mission of peace and love. We are trying to build the country, the state, and the people. Children must understand your mission, because we live in a world that needs peace”.

The Doulos Hope is a floating library and bookstore that travels to ports in various countries, mainly in Asia, bringing books and promoting educational and cultural activities. Originally designed as a cruise ship, it was adapted in 2023 for this function and has an international crew of volunteers.

During its stay in Dili, the fair offers more than 5,000 titles, including children’s literature, educational books, Christian-inspired works, and general interest titles. The initiative also promotes intercultural contact between the crew and the local community.

The fair is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Sundays, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Mondays, the ship is closed to the public for maintenance. On opening day, January 16th, the opening hours are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission on board costs 20 cents per person and is free for visitors under 18 and over 65.
