Government promotes access to information in remote areas

The Government inaugurated the receiver antenna of the Lospalos Community Radio (RCL) that was constructed with the support of the Secretariat of State of the Council of Ministers (SECM), as the legal authority responsible for the State-owned mass media communication bodies.

The SECM, through the Community Radio Centre (CRC), provides a special service in the sense of supporting the community radios in order to guarantee and promote access to information for the population that lives in remote areas. Besides the systematic repair of the equipment, the CRC also provides technical assistance and logistic support.

The manager of the Lospalos Community Radio, Nascimento Provencial, representing the Radio and Volunteers Council, expressed his gratitude: “we want to thank the Government, specially to the Secretariat of State of the Council of Ministers, for their support through the new tower for the Lospalos Community Radio.”

On the same occasion, the Lautem district Assistant-Administrator, Júlio Canto, thanked the Government, through the SECM, for the attention that has been given to this district.

Júlio Canto, also added that the development of the mass media communication bodies is important to support development in several aspects: “Radio is a very important means of mass media communications, for the dissemination of information about development and the life of this district’s community, to its population”. The only existent mean of mass media communication in this district, and that gives information to the community, is the Lospalos Community Radio.

Regarding this, Victor Maia, General-Director and representing the Secretary of State of the Council of Ministers, referred the importance of community radios since, according with the Mass media communication National Policy, community radio is an important communication channel, in what concerns the spread of information, specially in regards to Government activities in remote areas. “I ask you that you use the antenna well for the development of our country, through information about the Lospalos area”, highlighted the SECM General-Director.

The Lospalos Community Radio was created on the 16th of May of 2002 with the initiative of the Lautém community. The members or journalists that work in the RCL are volunteers. The RCL coverage area also includes the Viqueque and Baucau districts.
