The 12th edition of the ‘Government Page’ TV show will feature Minister of Transport and Communications Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu as a guest on Friday, September 5th, at 8:00 p.m., on Radio and Television of Timor-Leste (RTTL) and digital platforms. In this edition, Minister Miguel Manetelu will present the main achievements and priorities of his Ministry, highlighting the strategic projects of constructing Dili Airport and installing fibre optic cable, essential initiatives to strengthen the country’s mobility and digital connectivity.

In the interview, the Minister explains that “according to the organic law of the 9th Constitutional Government, the Ministry of Transport and Communications is a government department that defines, coordinates, implements, and evaluates policies on transport and communications, as well as meteorology, seismology, and postal services.” Its responsibilities include regulating communication services, promoting technological innovation, integrating air, sea, and land transport infrastructure, and developing modernisation projects such as Dili Airport and the fibre optic cable.
One of the key projects highlighted by the Minister is the development and expansion of Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport, regarded as “an important gateway to Timor-Leste” and a “priority” of the 9th Government Programme. The minister recalls the various stages of the process, from the initial studies to the current implementation phase, and discusses “the complexity of building this airport,” expressing his hope that “the airport be inaugurated during the term of the 9th Government.”
Miguel Manetelu also states that “the terminal that will now be built should serve 1.2 million people by 2054,” explaining that the runway extension “will be carried out in three phases,” with “the first phase corresponding to the extension of the runway to 2,100 metres, compared to the current 1,850 metres.” “The second phase will extend the runway to 2,500 metres, and the third phase will extend it to 3,000 metres, in addition to widening the runway from the current 30 metres to 45 metres.”
Regarding digital connectivity, the Minister states that “when our fibre optic network is ready (…), internet speeds will be faster and cheaper.” He also emphasises the importance of this infrastructure for implementing the Government’s e-government and digitisation initiatives, highlighting that “when we talk about digitisation, without good internet, digitisation does not work.” With the presence of fibre optic cable, the digitisation process will be more straightforward, both in the public sector and in providing more services to our young people and our community.
At the end of the interview, the Minister shares his vision for the future of the sector, stating the goal of creating “a transport system that can truly facilitate our movement, the mobility of people and goods from one place to another, safely.” He also expresses the wish to establish “a communications system that is secure, so that people can trust it. We want to have cheap and fast internet to make things easier for our citizens, our young people, and our students.”
The Minister also urges “the participation of the entire population, especially our young people,” reminding them that “when the State installs equipment, everyone must take care of it, because we are using the people’s money. The participation of the population and our young people is important in the development process.”
