On March 13th, 2025, at the Government Palace, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, accompanied by the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes, swore in Elizeu Isaac Fernandes as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rádio e Televisão de Timor-Leste, EP (RTTL, EP), for a four-year term.
In his speech, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers highlighted RTTL’s fundamental role as the public broadcasting service concessionaire, reiterating the Government’s commitment to modernising the company and strengthening the country’s media. “RTTL’s mission is clearly defined and guarantees an impartial, plural, and accessible radio and television service to all citizens. The Government will continue to support the modernisation of infrastructure, technological upgrades, and the training of the company’s professionals to strengthen the quality of information and expand its coverage nationwide”, he said.
Emphasising the importance of independent and credible media, the Minister stressed that RTTL must continue to play its role responsibly and with public commitment. “We want an increasingly strong, innovative, and accessible RTTL that promotes our language, culture and citizenship values. Quality information is a pillar of democracy, and our public radio and television play a central role in disseminating knowledge and promoting the public debate of ideas”.
Agio Pereira also emphasised the need for efficient management of the company and the commitment of its professionals to promoting public service. “An unwavering commitment to journalistic ethics, informative rigour, and impartiality must accompany the modernisation of RTTL. The media should be a space where all voices can express themselves, and citizens can find credible and balanced information”, he said.
The Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Dias Ximenes, emphasised the importance of good management of public resources and the need to guarantee the efficient operation of RTTL, EP. “The company must continue to respect the principles of public service, ensuring independent, credible, and accessible journalism for all Timorese. The Government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that RTTL fulfils its mission to inform, educate and promote national identity”, he stressed.
The new Chairman of the Board, Elizeu Isaac Fernandes, expressed his commitment to strengthening RTTL and emphasised the importance of adapting the company to the sector’s new dynamics. “RTTL is not merely a media outlet; it is a pillar of Timorese democracy. I will work closely with the RTTL teams to strengthen credibility and innovation in the media sector, ensuring that the company continues to serve the public interest with professionalism and informative rigour”, he said.
The appointment of Elizeu Isaac Fernandes was formalised by the Council of Ministers through Government Resolution no. 15/2025, of March 17th, succeeding José António Belo “Taraleu”, to whom the Minister and the Secretary of State expressed their gratitude for his work and dedication throughout his mandate.
Gastão Francisco de Sousa, Minister for Planning and Strategic Investment; Adérito Hugo da Costa, Vice Minister for Parliamentary Affairs; Noémio Mateus Soares Falcão, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tatoli Agency; as well as leaders and representatives of various national media were also present at the ceremony.
