On December 5th, 2024, the National Telecommunications Authority officially granted Starlink a general licence to use the radio spectrum, allowing the company to start marketing its internet services in the country.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to provide high-speed internet. This model is particularly effective in regions with limited, expensive, or non-existent access to traditional telecom infrastructure.
Minister Agio Pereira, the Spokesperson for the 9th Constitutional Government, points out that “the technology used by Starlink will make it possible to bring high-speed internet to remote regions of the country where fibre-optic cable coverage will still take time to implement”.
