October – Month of Education and Culture

The Ministry of Education has made know that this month of October, in Timor-Leste, is dedicated to Education and Culture. The objective is to extend and secure the implementation of the new policy for the sector, one that has “Build our Country and our Nation with a Quality Education” as a motto. During the whole month, in the schools throughout the country, extracurricular activities are going to be developed – such as contests, competitions, promotion of writing and oral diction, music and sport – having in view the population motivationn for the practice of reading and learning. It is also predicted for the delivery of two hundred digital pianos, donated by the South Korea, to the schools. October was chosen for the development of these activities precisely because it was in this month that, in 2008, the National Parliament approved the Basic Law of Education, one that the President promulgated and was published in the Republic Journal, still, in October. This is also the month when the timorese writer, Francisco Borja da Costa, was born. With the approval of the Basic Law of Education n.o 14 / 2008 a great reform of the sector was developed, that aims at the reparation of the teaching and learning quality in the country, and guaranty the access to education by all Timorese.
