Ministry of Health moves ahead with new hospitals in Manufahi, Ermera and Dili

The Ministry of Health, through the Director General of Corporate Services, Valentino Lisboa Marçal, announced on September 18th, 2024, that in 2025 work will begin on the construction of three new general hospitals in the municipalities of Manufahi, Ermera and Dili. This initiative is part of the government’s plan to improve the provision of health care to the population by strengthening the national hospital infrastructure.

According to Valentino Lisboa Marçal, “in 2025, following the plan approved by the last Budget Review Committee, we have a budget of around 700,000 US dollars to start the rehabilitation and construction of several health posts and centers, including three new general hospitals in the municipalities of Dili, Ermera and Manufahi.”  Ministry of Health moves ahead with new hospitals in Manufahi, Ermera and Dili

The Director General added that “the engineering teams are already on the ground carrying out the topographical survey” and stressed that “the Ermera hospital unit will have a psychiatric ward” and that the new “Dili general hospital will be built in the area of the old Comoro market”.

The construction of these hospitals reflects the 9th Constitutional Government’s commitment to improving hospital infrastructure in order to promote quality medical services that are accessible to the entire population. This project is also aligned with the implementation of the National Health Policy and the National Health Sector Strategic Plan 2011-2030 (PENSS 2011-2030), which aims to consolidate the vision of a “healthy Timor-Leste”, to ensure that all citizens have access to essential health care, regardless of their economic conditions, as enshrined in the Constitution.

The government is continuing to implement initiatives in the health sector, focused on improving infrastructures, strengthening medical and logistical materials, and optimizing the management of human resources, thus ensuring that the services provided respond to the needs of the population and promote equitable and universal access to health care.
