Minister Agio Pereira Prepares Official Visit to Brunei to Deepen Opportunities for Cooperation in the Oil and Gas Sector

The Minister of Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, met today, September 18th, 2024, with the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Timor-Leste, Wan Hadfi Latif, to discuss cooperation between the two countries, with a special focus on the development of the oil and gas sector.

 During the meeting, the Ambassador shared information with the Minister about the accelerated development of the oil and gas sector in Brunei, which has seen exponential growth over the last 10 years. This development was highlighted as a possible source of inspiration for Timor-Leste, which is at a crucial stage of negotiations on the Greater Sunrise project.  Minister Agio Pereira Prepares Official Visit to Brunei to Deepen Opportunities for Cooperation in the Oil and Gas Sector

 Minister Agio Pereira was grateful for the sharing of information and stressed that “Brunei’s experience is a valuable example for Timor-Leste, which is entering a very important phase in the development of its energy resources.”

 During the meeting, Minister Agio Pereira’s next official visit to Brunei Darussalam, scheduled for October 6-11, 2024, was also discussed. This visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, with an emphasis on meetings with senior Bruneian government officials, including the Vice Minister of Energy, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, and the Minister of Finance and Economy II, Dato Seri Setia Dr. Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah.  Ambassador Wan Hadfi Latif also suggested that, during the visit, Minister Agio Pereira take the opportunity to visit the world-class refining and petrochemical complex located on the island of Pulau Muara Besar in Brunei, which could serve as a reference model for future industrial developments in Timor-Leste.
