Timor-Leste participates in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council (ASCC)

The Minister of Social Solidarity and Inclusion of Timor-Leste, Verónica das Dores, participated in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council (ASCC) Meetings with Parliamentarians, eminent ASCC personalities and Chairs of ASCC sectoral Ministerial Bodies, which took place on August 12th and 13th, 2024 in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The event brought together high-level representatives from ASEAN member countries and Timor-Leste as an observer. Its aim was to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and recommendations for drafting the ASCC Strategic Plan, including digitalisation, demographic change, climate change and stakeholder engagement.

During her speech, Minister Verónica das Dores expressed her gratitude to the Government of Laos for its warm hospitality and emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in facing common challenges. “Timor-Leste shares the same concerns as the other ASEAN countries, especially regarding climate threats and cyber security”, said the Minister, emphasising the relevance of a robust and adaptable strategy for the region’s future.

The Minister also praised the comprehensive consultation process conducted by the ad hoc working group co-chairs and the ASEAN Secretariat, stating that “these diverse perspectives and specialised orientations will contribute to a Post-2025 Strategic Plan that is inclusive and aligned with regional sustainable development goals”.
