On June 29th, 2024, the Government of Japan, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), presented to the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Dias Ximenes, the project for the construction of the new building for Radio and Television of Timor-Leste, EP, (RTTL, EP).
The project, which is due to start this year, has a budget of 5.9 million dollars, includes the demolition of the current building and the completion of the new construction in 2026. The new building will have an auditorium, recording studios and rooms for journalists. The project also includes technical training to develop the technical and operational skills of the RTTL, EP team.
The Secretary of State for Social Communication considered this construction project to be very positive as it will significantly improve the working conditions and operational capacities of RTTL, EP.
The meeting was attended by the President of RTTL, EP, José António Belo “TARALEU” and the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Adeline Carrier.
The agreement for the construction of the new RTTL building was signed on August 11th, 2023 between the Japanese Ambassador to East Timor, Tetsuya Kimura, and the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Adeline Carrier. The signing ceremony, held at the United Nations facilities in Dili, was attended by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, the Secretary of State for Social Communication, and the UN Resident Coordinator in East Timor, Funmi Balogun.
