Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, together with several members of the 9th Constitutional Government, took part in the annual diplomatic reception ceremony hosted by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on February 20th, 2024, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.
Under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships, Fostering Collaboration”, the event brought together ambassadors from friendly countries, both resident and non-resident in Timor-Leste, to strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation between Timor-Leste and its friendly countries.
In his inaugural speech, President Ramos-Horta expressed his gratitude for the continued friendship and support of Timor-Leste’s partner countries over the years. He highlighted the importance of international partnerships in the nation’s development, stating that “events such as today’s reception provide an opportunity to reconnect and strengthen vital bonds of friendship and cooperation as our young nation continues to grow”.
In his speech, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão thanked President Ramos-Horta for bringing together the ambassadors of various friendly countries. He stressed the importance of occasions like this to “build relationships, speak freely and learn from each other”, as well as “an opportunity to discuss the policies and priorities of the 9th Constitutional Government”, “elected to develop our country and create jobs and opportunities for our people”.
The Head of Government emphasised the need for international cooperation and the strengthening of bilateral relations, underlining the Government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, diversify the economy and promote sectors such as health and education.
Xanana Gusmão closed his speech with an appeal to promote dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that, despite the global challenges, the search for understanding between nations, the search for common ground and the promotion of peace are fundamental.
