The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Francisco da Costa Monteiro, took part, at the invitation of the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, in the 41st ASEAN Energy Ministers’ Meeting (AMEM) 2023 and the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) 2023. These events, which brought together energy ministers from ASEAN and partner countries, investors and industry experts, took place in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, from August 24th to 26th.
AMEM aims to promote a space for intensive cooperation to develop energy resources in the ASEAN region and attract private sector participation and investment in the industry.
During the 41st AMEM and its related meetings (including AMEM+3, the 17th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting (EAS-EMM), CEO Dialogue and International Organisations, and other bilateral meetings), several important issues concerning the region’s evolving energy landscape were addressed. Topics ranged from collective carbon neutrality targets to the viability of nuclear energy to the need for private sector involvement and investors in the energy sector.
In his speech, Minister Francisco da Costa Monteiro emphasised the importance of collective action in shaping a sustainable and resilient energy future. This position reflects AMEM’s objectives and underlines Timor-Leste’s commitment to being part of regional and global dialogues affecting the energy sector.
As an observer country, Timor-Leste’s active participation in this conference represents a significant step towards aligning national energy policies with regional objectives and taking advantage of the opportunities resulting from closer cooperation within ASEAN.
