India Announces Decision to Establish an Embassy in Timor-Leste

During the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – India meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit held today in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced the decision to establish an Indian Embassy in the capital of Timor-Leste, Dili.

This decision is part of a 12-point plan for India’s relations with the region, presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to strengthen cooperation and diplomatic ties in the East Asian region. This plan covers various issues, from connectivity to digital public infrastructure and actions to tackle terrorism.

In a statement published on the website of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is mentioned that “this decision reflects the importance that India attaches to ASEAN and its relations with Timor-Leste”. It adds that “Timor-Leste and the members of ASEAN have warmly welcomed the decision”.

The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana, is attending this 43rd ASEAN Summit on behalf of Timor-Leste, an observer country in the organisation moving towards full membership.
