On August 28th and 29th, Timor-Leste welcomed the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Dr AK Abdul Momen. In the first visit by a Bangladeshi Minister to Timor-Leste, Mr Momen met with the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and other members of the Timorese Government to strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During his meeting with the Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs Minister, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão emphasised the remarkable socio-economic successes achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed and expressed his gratitude for Bangladesh’s contribution during the period from 1999 to 2006, when the country took part in the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission to support the Timorese and Timor-Leste in restoring the independence.
During this meeting, the Head of Government and Minister AK Abdul Momen expressed their willingness to collaborate in various areas, such as health, education, training, food security and the response to climate change.
The Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs Minister also held bilateral meetings with the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agio Pereira, and the Minister of Health, Elia Antonio de Araújo dos Reis Amaral, to discuss bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as responding to climate change, education, agriculture, food security and bilateral trade, among others.
Both countries are committed to strengthening their diplomatic ties and exploring opportunities for cooperation in various areas, aiming to promote the development and well-being of their peoples.
