Timor-Leste Government delegation holds a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Bhutan

The Minister of Finance, Rui Gomes, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Adaljiza Magno, accompanied by members of the Timor-Leste delegation, on March 6th, 2023, in Doha, Qatar, held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lotay Tshering.

This bilateral meeting between the Delegation of Timor-Leste and the Head of the Bhutanese Government took place within the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) framework, which had as its general theme “From Potential to Prosperity”.

In this bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Lotay Tshering shared with the Timor-Leste delegation information regarding the experience and lessons Bhutan learned in preparing to graduate from the group of Least Developed Countries, which is expected to occur this year.

Over several years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, Bhutan has implemented a series of reforms in some key areas, including reform of financial institutions and a reform of the public administrative sector. In addition, Bhutan has initiated substantial investment in strategic areas such as health and education.

The Minister of Finance, Rui Gomes, started the discussion by conveying the greetings of His Excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, to the Prime Minister, Lotay Tshering, and, on behalf of the Timor-Leste delegation, conveyed the sincere acknowledgements to the Prime Minister, Lotay, who accepted this request for an audience from the Timor-Leste delegation.

Minister Rui Gomes and Minister Adaljiza Magno also thanked Prime Minister Lotay for his willingness to share Bhutan’s experiences and lessons learned. The Timor-Leste delegation noted all the helpful information transmitted by Prime Minister Lotay. From now on, it will seek to learn from these lessons to prepare best to graduate from the group of Least Developed Countries.
