The national secretariat of the global movement to improve nutrition, known as the “SUN Movement” or “Scaling Up Nutrition Movement”, organised, on February 3rd, 2023, a workshop for the annual joint assessment of the country’s progress towards achieving national nutrition goals.
The Scaling Up Nutrition “SUN Movement” is a political movement established in 2010 by government entities, agencies, and organisations, founded on the principle that all people have the right to adequate food and nutrition.
The movement’s permanent secretariat is based in Geneva, Switzerland. So far, it has 65 member countries working together to find truly transformative methods and solve the nutrition problem in their countries.
This workshop was an opportunity for everyone involved in improving national nutrition, at government and non-government levels, to jointly reflect, in a participatory and transparent manner, on the progress made over the past year towards achieving national nutrition and food security goals aligned with sectoral and national priorities.
The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, representing the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, in the opening of the event, reiterated the “national commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2030”. “Especially regarding SDG 2, Timor-Leste’s goals are to end hunger, achieve food security, good nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.
“Therefore, by 2030, Timor-Leste intends to ensure universal access to safe and nutritious food and end all forms of malnutrition,” highlighted Fidelis Magalhães.
The Minister also defended that “to solve the major nutrition problem in Timor-Leste, it is necessary to have a joint action plan that all people and institutions accept and support”.
