The Minister of Justice, Lúcia Lobato, presented, on the 5th of May, the draft Law proposal on Land, to the National Parliament’s Commission A, which takes care of the constitutional issues, justice, public administration, local authorities and Government legislation. The Minister asked the National Parliament to be quick in the approval of the related law so that the population can start enjoying its benefits rather sooner than later,.
“It’s time to look to the illegal practices, that many have been conducting, as for instance: selling other people’s land or even State land, falsely declaring to be the owner of those properties. We hope that after the approval of this law, all these problems may be terminated”, expressed the Minister.
In regards to the benefits that the approval of this law will bring to the people, the Minister explained, “the Government has the responsibility to compensate the citizen who’s land is occupied by the State. So, when the Government intends to occupy a population’s property, it must do so under the Expropriation Law in a way that permits compensation to its owners”.
Fernanda Borges, president of Commission A of the National Parliament, also spoke about the importance of this law: “The Law on Land is, without a doubt, very important, the contents are very detailed in relation to its benefits, but its consequence still needs to be revised. In regards to the difficulty the people face, the political decision taken, supported by this law, can now ensure the judicial certainty of the citizens’ actual rights”.
