Timor-Leste celebrated World Children’s Day with various activities from the 1st to the 3rd of June 2019, including a seminar on “investing in the family, preventing child abuse” held at the Baucau Convention Center.
The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Dulce de Jesus Soares, congratulated children, parents, teachers and authorities who are fighting for the implementation of children’s rights in Timor-Leste.
“Mothers and fathers should set a good example for their children, because their future depends on their parents”, he said.
The minister recalled that the mission of the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports is to ensure the protection of children, with emphasis on their development and participation in the country. She stressed, therefore, that it was necessary to involve all parties in the implementation of measures aimed at guaranteeing the rights of minors and thus to respond to the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Commissioner for the Rights of the Child, Dinora Granadeiro, stressed the importance of the participation of children in this celebration, as it is an opportunity to celebrate their day “with joy” through participation in various recreational activities.
The ceremony was attended by the National Council for Reconstruction (CNRT) MP Maria Gorumali Barreto, the President of the Municipality of Baucau, António Guterres, the Commander of the National Police of Timor-Leste of the Municipality of Baucau, development partners, teachers, parents and children.
