Representatives of the Office of the Minister of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Economic Affairs met with officials of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to analyze the coordination of migration policies in the country on June 13, 2019 at the Government Palace in Dili.
During the meeting, there was an analysis of the implementation in the country of the United Nations-sponsored international agreement on a secure, orderly and regular migration (GCM), covering the various dimensions of international migration, which was signed by Timor-Leste and the heads of state of 164 countries in December 2018 in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh. The agreement sets out 23 objectives and concrete measures to assist countries in promoting safe, regular and orderly migration and in dealing with the issues of border, information and integration.
Coordination was also discussed for the creation and updating of migratory data collection measures for the planning of migratory policies which support national development, adjusted to the country’s migratory profile. This data will allow us to understand, in particular, which municipalities with the highest immigration rate and what is the economic impact in these communities. It will also allow us to know the quantity and characteristics of visitors that the country receives, which will allow us to adjust national economic policies.
