3rd International Conference on the Future of the Portuguese Language in the World System Portuguese Language and Globalization
The Third International Conference on the Future of the Portuguese Language in the World System takes place on June 15th and 16th, at the Dili Conventions Centre, under the rotating presidency of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, now with Timor-Leste.
The event is organized by the National Commission of Timor-Leste for the International Institute of the Portuguese Language (IPL), in collaboration with the Executive Committee of the IPL, with the theme “Portuguese Language and Globalization.”
The Opening Conference will be made by Mari Alkatiri, former Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, and will include four themes.
On June 15th, two themes will be discussed:
- “Portuguese, polycentric language of the 21st Century”, which includes various speeches from recognized academics. This theme will be introduced by António Correia e Silva, Professor at the University of Cape Verde;
- “Education and training in Portuguese Language in multilingual contexts “, which will also be reflected by renowned scholars, with the starting lecture being held by Edleise Mendes, President of the Portuguese Foreign Language International Society, and teacher at the Federal University of Bahia.
On June 16th, communications and discussions will take place around the following themes:
- “The economic potential of the Portuguese Language”, which also includes reflections from experts, with the starting lecture being held by Ana Paula Laborinho, President of the National Commission of Portugal for the IPL and President of the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language;
- “Portuguese, language of culture, science and innovation”, which will also be reflected by renowned scholars, with the starting lecture given by Moisés Martins, professor at the University of Minho (Portugal).
The closing interventions will be given by João Inocêncio Piedade, who will speak on “The historical mediation of the Portuguese language in the Timorese culture and identity,” and by Lourenço do Rosário, with a dissertation on the “Policies and management of the Portuguese language.”
