The Government of Timor-Leste is sending key officials to participate in two international events focusing on maritime boundary delimitation to be held in Bali from the 26th to the 29th of August.
Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Abel Guterres, the Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Chief Negotiator of the Maritime Boundary Council, H.E. Joaquim da Fonseca, the Chief Executive Officer of the Maritime Boundary Office, Ms. Elizabeth Exposto, and the Director of Legal Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco Ornai will have a unique opportunity to inform international participants of Timor-Leste’s position on its maritime boundary delimitation and discuss pathways towards the resolution of maritime boundary disputes.
The International Seminar on Maritime Delimitation organized by the Korean Maritime Institute takes place on the 26th of August and is followed by a two day workshop on the 27th and 28th of August convened by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea [ITLOS] in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The ITLOS workshop will give insight into the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea with special attention given to the role of the Tribunal. Timor-Leste’s delegates will discuss the process involved in submitting cases to the Tribunal, study case law, examine proceedings currently underfoot and consider the application of provisional measures under UNCLOS.
Spokesperson for the Government of Timor-Leste, Minister of State Agio Pereira noted “as Timor-Leste seeks to settle maritime boundaries with our neighbors we look to international law as the basis for equitable outcomes. We commend the participation of our officials as they both present the issues facing our nation in this area and learn from the expertise and experience of others.”
