Press Release
Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers from November 24th, 2014
The Council of Ministers met extraordinarily this Monday, November 24th, 2014, in the Council of Ministers’ meeting room, at the Government Palace, in Dili, an approved the Proposal for appointment of the Special Envoy of CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries) to Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
The Government proposed the appointment of Dr. José Ramos-Horta to take up this position on behalf of Timor-Leste, established under the scope of the Rotating Presidency of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP)..
Equatorial Guinea became part of CPLP last July, during the 10th Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Díli, and it is important to follow-up the social and political development of this country, as well as providing all the necessary support to the new member, in its process of integration into the Community.
Regarding Guinea Bissau, a country to which Timor-Leste has been providing special support, it is important to continue monitoring the still difficult transitional process and maintenance of social and political peace.
Since Timor-Leste is holding the Presidency of the CPLP for two years, and the recommendations of the July Summit suggest the follow-up of the situation in these two countries, and having already received the previous agreement by the remaining member-countries of the Community, the Council of Ministers has decided to propose, to the President of the Republic, the appointment of the Nobel Peace Prize and former leader of the United Nations’ mission in Guinea Bissau, Dr. José Ramos-Horta, to assume the position of Special Envoy to Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
