Government launches the First Transparency Website

This Tuesday, March 15, in the Dili Convention Centre, the Government launched the Transparency Website.

The Prime-Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, said that this is just one of the measures that the Government is implementing to contribute for the country’s development and to impede corruption: “A very important measure that establishes a new global standard for informing citizens, offering a new path to transparency, responsibility, supervision and control”.

This website (www.transparency.gov.tl) is available in Tétum, Portuguese and English and provides Timor-Leste’s State accounts, since 2002, to whoever is interested, as the Ministry of Finance, Emília Pires, explained: “Directors, Ministers, partners, civil society … when they want to know information about State expenditure, this website has that. This direct and online! When the money goes out, it goes into the website system and you can see a value of expenditure always up-to-date. It is a very powerful information.”

The official launch was done by the Prime-Minister in the presence of the President of the Republic and members of the Government, National Directors, development partners, members of parliament and many guests, amongst which the presence of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Timor-Leste, Ameerah Haq is highlighted.
