In 2010-08-05

“Many Languages, One People”

The main objective of this meeting is to promote public awareness and discussion of the social, cultural and educational role of the Timor-Leste languages of Timor-Leste, including Tetum, among representatives of linguistic groups.
The event will be held in the Conference Room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dili, with the presence of the Prime Minister, among other high dignitaries.
During the meeting the organization plans to launch a nation-wide “Timor-Leste Languages Writing Competition”, aimed at promoting literary production in the country’s non-official Timor-Leste languages. This is an initiative of the President of the Republic (who will preside over the launch), Ministry of Education and the Office of the Goodwill Ambassador for Education, Kirsty Sword Gusmão.
This first conference on the Timor-Leste Languages is organized by UNESCO National Commission for Timor-Leste, National Institute of Linguistics (INL, Portuguese acronym), Timor Lorosa’e Nippon Culture Centre and Secretariat of State for Culture.
