Timor-Leste among the least corrupt countries in Asia-Pacific
Timor-Leste maintained the trend of recent years in the fight against corruption, moving up to 77th place in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), prepared by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Transparency International, by reaching 42 points, according to the report released this Tuesday, January 31st, 2023.
In the last five years, Timor-Leste has risen seven points in the Corruption Perception Index, ranking in the top half of the least corrupt countries in Asia-Pacific, in 14th place out of 31 countries in the region.
Only Singapore (5th) and Malaysia (61st) among the ASEAN countries are above Timor-Leste. Among the nine CPLP member countries, only Portugal (33rd), Cabo Verde (35th), and São Tomé Príncipe (65th) are ranked above Timor-Leste.
The CPI is the world's oldest and most comprehensive corruption measurement tool. It analyses levels of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories, scoring them from 0 (perceived as very corrupt) to 100 (very transparent), based on the perceptions of experts and business executives on levels of public sector corruption.
