Timor-Leste regrets the passing away of Madeleine Albright

The Government of Timor-Leste, on behalf of the whole nation, presents its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State of the United States of America, who passed away last March 23rd, at the age of 84, victim of cancer.

Madeleine Albright was the first woman Secretary of State of the United States of America, a position she held between 1997 and 2001, during the administration of former President Bill Clinton.

The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, in a letter to the family, expressed, on behalf of the 8th Constitutional Government, “deepest condolences to Albright’s family, colleagues and friends”.

The Head of Government also pointed out that Mrs Madeleine Albright will always be remembered for the important role of support and friendship given to the Timorese cause in the performance of her noble duties as Secretary of State of the Government of the United States of America, particularly during the Popular Consultation (Referendum) of August 30th, 1999, and the subsequent end to the violence, which allowed for the achievement of the Restoration of National Independence, which would take place on May 20th, 2002”.
