Minister of Finance in the United States of America

From the 12th to the 21st of April, the Minister of Finance was present at the University of California were she was invited to participate in several debates, about Public Finance Management, with students of that University. She also had the opportunity to speak to the San Diego community about Timor-Leste. Afterwards, she initiated conversations with professors from the university who showed a great interested in helping Timor-Leste. From that resulted a mobilization of students who wanted to choose Timor-Leste as a destiny for an exchange program to take place the next summer. These students will have the opportunity of sharing their knowledge with the future youth leaders of our nation and with the people.

On the 22nd and 23rd , Emília Pires, together with the Minister of Infra-Structures, Pedro Lay, travelled to Washington to participate in a two day meeting of the “Ministerial Dialogue on Sanitation and Water for All: A Global Framework for Action”. Besides this meeting, the two ministers had other meetings with important entities out of which stand out Srs Sara Cliffe, Special Representative and Director of the World Bank, Mr. Jeffrey Gutman, Vice-President of the World Bank and Network Head Operations Policy & Country Services, Professor Jeffrey Sachs and his group and also George Soros, Chairman of the Soros Fund Management, LLC and founder of The Open Society Institute.

To finalize the trip, on the 24th, Emília Pires and Pedro Lay went to New York for a meeting with Ambassador Sofía Borges, Ambassador for the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste in the United Nations. In this meeting they talked about the g7+ and the International Dialogue on the Construction of Peace and the State, and focussed the conversation on the best way to coordinate this theme, now that Timor-Leste exercises an important role at a global level.
