Government launches the identity card issuance project to all municipalities

The launch ceremony of the issuance of identity cards to the municipalities of Aileu, Ainaro, Liquiça, Manatuto, Manufahi and Viqueque enlargement was held on February 2nd in Liquiça.

The project is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice, with the support from the European Union and Camões - Cooperation and Language Institute.

In her speech, the Minister of Justice, Maria Ângela Carrascalão, pointed out that Timor-Leste "only had the birth certificate, and the identity card was still missing.” The minister also said that this "is also a step towards the decentralization of the Timorese public administration and consolidation of the rule of law."

 "We are Timorese. We feel very pleased taking this step towards legality and today we are proud to take an even further step towards reaching a true rule of law", added the minister.

The Secretary for the Municipal Administrator of Liquiçá, Renato Nunes Serrão, explained that the purpose of the system is to allow the community to access a simpler and faster way to obtain their identity cards.

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister in the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Adriano do Nascimento, the Ambassador of Portugal in Díli, José Pedro Machado Vieira, the PNTL General Commander, Julio da Costa Hornay, local authorities and different ministries directors.
