Prime Minister to participate in the World Economic Forum on ASEAN in Malaysia

Tomorrow Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Rui Maria de Araújo travels to Malaysia, to participate in the World Economic Forum on ASEAN, held in Kuala Lumpur on the 1st and 2nd of June. The Prime Minister’s active involvement demonstrates Timor-Leste’s commitment to strengthening public-private cooperation and building economic engagement in the region. Organizers note that the meeting “will be an ideal platform for senior decision-makers from a range of sectors to facilitate greater collaboration between industry, government and civil society, and to address regional challenges.”

On Wednesday morning Prime Minister Araújo, along with the Prime Minister of Cambodia H.E. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, will make special remarks at a session on Blended Finance in the Asia-Pacific Context on before attending an afternoon meeting on Learning from the Best in ASEAN Infrastructure. At the Opening Plenary of the forum which follows Prime Minister Araújo with be joined by the Prime Minister of Cambodia, the Vice-President of Indonesia and the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, to discuss Shaping the ASEAN Agenda for inclusion and Growth. Later in the afternoon the Prime Minister attends an Informal Gathering of World Economic Leaders.

Thursday begins with an event called Foundations Meet the Leader with Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo where members of Young Global Leaders, Global Shapers and Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurs meet with the Prime Minister to discuss leadership and Timor-Leste. Later in the day opening remarks will be delivered by the Prime Minister at a session on a Vision for ASEAN from Japan and Other Nations.

Several meetings are scheduled throughout the trip and include a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam H.E. Trinh Dinh Dung. As a part of his return trip the Prime Minister will make a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Singapore, H.E. Lee Hsien Loong.

With its focus on economic growth, coordination and ASEAN, the forum presents an excellent opportunity to build connections and tap into expertise that will help us in our goal to build a sustainable diversified economy in Timor-Leste.”

Prime Minister Araújo is scheduled to return to Dili on Saturday the 4th of June.
