"Lawyers are an important element to the development of Timor-Leste"

Minister of Justice, Ivo Valente, presented, on April 20th, the graduation certificates to 32 students that attended the third phase of the Training Course for Private Lawyers, in a ceremony held at the Judicial Training Centre, in Díli.

For Minister Ivo Valente “lawyers are an important element to the development of the judicial system in Timor-Leste and we believe they will help improve it.”

The graduates completed the 24 moths training, divided between 15 months of theory and nine months of internship. The training was provided by the Judicial Training Centre, which, according to article 11o of Law n.º 11/2008, of 30th of July, establishes the rules to the exercise of private law in Timor-Leste and the professional training of lawyers.

This training aims to implement a juridical and judiciary culture, which will meet the existent challenges and will contribute to strengthen the capacities of judicial actors in the country’s justice system.

“This training will give continuity and is essential to the creation of the Timor-Leste Bar Association”, informs Minister Ivo Valente.

Participating in this ceremony were General Public Defender, Sérgio Hornai, the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice – OHRJ, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Dean of the UNTL, the Lawyer Association of Timor-Leste, international organizations such as UNDP, Asia Foundation and USAID, civil society, national directors of the Ministry of Justice and graduates’ family members.
