Timor-Leste chairs the Business Confederation of CPLP

The Prime Minister, Rui Maria de Araújo, attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Business Confederation of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (portuguese acronym CE–CPLP) governing bodies and in the allocation of the Honorary Presidency to Timor-Leste. The event took place at Hotel Novo Turismo, in Díli, February 28th.

In his speech, Rui Maria de Araújo requested the Business Confederation entrepreneurs to outline action programs to help achieving the goals of the CPLP country members.

The Head of the Executive thanked the presence of those entrepreneurs in Timor-Leste and showed hope that the outlined fundamental goals might turn even stronger the trust between CPLP member States, in order to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development in the Community’s countries.

“Timor-Leste is located in the Asian continent and that geographical location is an advantage to Timor-Leste on the economy sector”, referred the Prime Minister, by adding that it is necessary to reinforce cooperation in the areas of politics, diplomacy, culture, education and development between member countries of this organization.

On his turn, the President of the CE–CPLP General Assembly, Jorge Rocha de Matos, stated that it is necessary to reinforce the economic sector of the Community. Also according to him, CPLP is rich, however, from an economic point of view the population is not yet released from poverty. Therefore, he asked for the Community to adapt to globalization changes.

The president elect of the Business Confederation of the CPLP, Jorge Manuel Serrano in turn said that, during his two-year presidency, he will promote Timor-Leste amongst the investors from the Community countries, for most of these countries are in good economical shape.

Moreover, according to Serrano, the presence of Timor-Leste in the CPLP aims to deal with collective interests and also with its own interests. He said that he believes that Timor-Leste may come to invest in other countries as they are now investing in Timor-Leste.

Jorge Serrano will lead the Business Confederation of CPLP, over the period from 2014 to 2016.
